The Altar of the Unknown God sits to the right of the Camp Half-Blood Austin Dining Hall. Abundant with offerings, the Altar is for those Gods who have not yet made themselves known to us. We use the altar as a sign of willingness to receive help from those Unknown Gods who might wish to give it.
Incense and herb bundles burn protective smoke over the altar, and campers are invited to take in the presence of the Unknown and accept it. Hanging over the offering plate, a transgender pride flag flutters in the wind, a symbol of acceptance that we do not have the knowledge to understand where in the spectrum of gender identity any Unknown God lies.
This space is a place of reverence and respect, and it is wished that it be treated as such. It is an area of self-reflection and peacefulness.
